We have a problem...

The NHS spends more on diabetic footcare in England than the combined cost of breast, prostate and lung cancers; with over 90% of expenditure relating to ulceration.

Having a foot ulcer can have a huge impact on someone's health and wellbeing.  Diabetic foot ulcers are preventable, and even 75% of recurrent ulcers could be avoided.

In this country there are over 180 diabetic foot related amputation each week!

The team at DUET diabetes are on a mission to play their part in improving these statistics –  together we can make a difference!

Having developed and run our ‘diabetic foot screening’ workshop for over 3 years and latterly adapted it to be delivered as live and interactive webinars, we have further evolved our training so that ‘would be learners’ can access the content in their own time.  This is in response to those who want to either up skill or refresh their knowledge but are unable to attend the live sessions.

Introducing the Diabetic Foot Screening Mini-Module series.

These are ‘bite sized’ modules providing the same content as our live webinar workshops.  These consist of a pre-recorded session led by Gemma Andrews, downloadable supporting documentation relating to the session and separate film clips for the demonstrations shared within the main session of each module.

She is passionate about promoting the ideal that people living with diabetes, regardless of their age or circumstances, should be treated and cared for in such as way that their quality of life is maintained or even improved.

One main area of focus for Lynne is to ensure that adults living with diabetes have the best possible chance to keep their feet healthy and avoid foot problems or surgical treatment.  Hence the ‘Hands on Feet’ training portfolio continues to grow and develop; helping health, care, beauty and wellness practitioners to improve their skills and confidence whilst following best practice.

Nicola O'Brian
BSc (Hons) Podiatry, HCPC Registered Podiatrist

Nicola O'Brian is a Podiatrist who gained her BSc Hons Podiatry from Brighton University in 2001. For the last 18yrs has specialised in Cosmetic Podiatry and has a special interest in Dermatology & Rheumatology.

Her interest in Cosmetics meant that she was treating a large proportion of patients with fungal nail pathologies.

Therefore she wanted to develop a way of treating the Fungal Nails and not just disguise them.

A method that didn't require expensive machinery that most small private practices cannot afford.

So Lacuna Method® was born.

It took over 4yrs of development to bring a simple and safe methodology to the public domain.

Nicola now spends her time travelling the UK & Europe delivering training courses to Podiatrists and Foot Health Practitioners so they can deliver The Lacuna Method® service to their patients.

There are now Lacuna Practitioners curing Fungal nails in every county in England, Most regions of Scotland & Wales, Northen Ireland, Ireland, Guernsey, Longuedoc region of France, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Australia and soon to be the USA and Canada.

Testimonials and nice words.

“All excellent but especially the observation & discussion of foot photos.  It has given me more confidence in spotting the difference between fungal infections & micro vascular damage. Also I would feel more confident in my communication with client & when to refer or not to! Also brilliant for giving me confidence in spotting other problems relating to diabetes, like signs of ulcer formation.

As Diabetes is a huge growing problem, understanding & awareness of this disease is vital. I think the more therapists & people that recognise changes in the feet related to Diabetes, the more we can help relieve the burden on the nhs & us all as tax payers but ultimately & most importantly, to save someone’s foot/feet & avoid amputation avoids so much distress, these are life changing issues for that individual!”

Maureen Morgan Reynolds - Self employed holistic therapist

Attended Diabetic Foot Awareness for Beauty and Wellness Therapists webinar workshop,
November 2020

“It gave me the confidence to do a clear concise referral which was what I found myself doing only the following day! So thank you. I was able to assess the situation, and confidently describe my findings to a GP thus ensuring my patient had the care he so badly needed.  I thought Gemma was a lovely, easy going lecturer. And Lynn had orchestrated the whole thing beautifully. I was able to access all the necessary material I needed prior to the workshop in preparation.”
